EXHIBITION Icons or Design ?
13 FEBRUARY / 16 MAY
An ever changing discipline, design has now entered into a more complex era. Its’ leaning today towards a possible virtuality, bringing about a change of sense and status. Objects can henceforth serve as icons conceived as images and produced from images. All these questions, however, do not distract from the pleasure of contemplating an object for its’ beauty and form, nor from the choice of colours and materials, or the genius of the designer.
At a time when one of the main preoccupations of artists is the environment, objects in our daily lives increasingly catch our attention, touch us and create analogies with contemporary art forms. The exhibition in Vence demonstrates the ambiguity which lies within objects of contemporary design.
Is it really all about art work or quite simply about functional objects?
Certainly, their impact should not be underestimated for, it is true to say that they are omnipresent and have an influence on today’s way of life.
The Vitra Design Museum is recognised as a world leader in design, founded in 1989 at Weil am Rhein, near Basel and established by the great American-Canadian architect, Frank Gehry, who is in fact, one of the partners involved in this exhibition.
